Frequently asked questions.
What should I bring?
While we try to provide you with everything you will need during your stay, we also recommend packing a few extras, and remember sometimes the day and night temps differ greatly.
We suggest bringing the following:
Warm clothing. Warm socks for nighttime. Bathing suit. Sunscreen. Closed toe shoes for walking the trails. Flashlight (phone light works fine, we also provide lanterns). Newspaper for starting fires
How do I get to Gatherwild Ranch?
Gatherwild is located to the east of the Hudson, just between Hudson & Rhinebeck, about 2.5 hours north of NYC. If possible, we recommend driving so you have the freedom and mobility to explore the area. If you have a car, pack and go! For those without a car, take the Amtrak. It arrives in Hudson, about a 15 minute drive away. You have 2 options from there - take a taxi or rent a car.
Enterprise Rental, Hudson. 518-828-5492. They offer pick up & drop offs at the train station.
McMann Taxi, Hudson. (518) 610-0071 Call in advance.
What do I eat while I’m there?
We offer local NY goods for sale on site in our shop. Think local farm raised meets, cheeses, produce straight from the gardens, eggs from the coop, breakfast granola.
Need more? Otto’s Market is a fantastic curated grocer just down the road. Stocking up for the long haul? Hannaford grocery is 15 minutes north.
Pack as much food, snacks and drinks as you wish. There is a large cooler at each site with ice for sale on site.
Want to eat out? Otto’s for breakfast & lunch, and Gaskins for dinner are fantastic options, just down the road. Spread your culinary reach a little farther, and check our list of amazing restaurants in the close neighboring towns of Hudson, Rhinebeck, Tivoli & Kingston.
Please tell me more about how to prepare that food?
Like most of your experiences at Gatherwild, you have the option to use a shared kitchen or keep to yourself at your secluded site and grill with charcoal or over the open fire. The kitchen is always open and available, stocked with a propane cooktop, dishes, cookware, utensils, chilled drinking water and whatever else you might need. Each site is also provided with a charcoal grill so you can relax and slow cook all you like. If you borrow some items from the kitchen, please clean and return them when you’re done! Individual food is all stored in your personal cooler. The fridge at the kitchen is utilized for shared items like water and coffee supplies.
Did you say coffee?
There will always be coffee at the ready with a variety of almond milk & cream in the fridge. Weekend mornings it will be prepared for you, but if you get there first, help yourself!
Can I have a fire?
Everyone has their own private firepit. We have firewood for purchase ($10 / large bundle) and it is SELF SERVE at the main wood pile.
What are the bathrooms like?
The brand new modern bathhouse might be your favorite part. Artisan tiled showers with a view and yes, flushing toilets. Sauna coming in 2024. They are a short walk from your accommodation. See our map for more specifics about the distance from each.
Can I bring a pet?
You are welcome to bring one well behaved pup (sorry no cats due to common allergy) for an additional $35 non-refundable pet deposit, and a signed pet form in advance. Here are some important notes about good pet etiquette:
Please be mindful of cleanliness of dogs on the linens and carpets. Any damage above normal laundering will be charged in addition.
Please be mindful of other dogs on the property. If they are not friendly with other dogs consider leaving them at home.
Pets are not permitted to stay in tents alone.
Pets MUST be on a leash when not at your site. There are free range chickens and ducks that wander near the garden and pond area. Nobody wants to see the result of dog instinct around slow waddling birds.
If possible, please move poop to the side of main paths with a stick rather than a plastic bag
What if I get hot?
We offer ways to cool down on site this season! Big mushroom sprinklers, misting rocks, AC lounge, fans in each accommodation and AC in some of the premium tents and cabins. There are magic swim spots sprinkled all over the Valley & Catskill mountains as well.
Be Aware. This is a wild and natural environment and we embrace the uncertainty of the land.
Poison ivy is lurking around tree bases, bushes and in the woods. It is attracted to trees, and this was a former apple orchard. If you go off the main paths, please wear closed toe shoes.
Ticks are common. Check your skin and hair frequently and before sleep. If you find one on you, just pull it out and squish it. It is OK.
